Democratic senators on Capitol Hill refused to acknowledge the sexual assault allegations that have emerged against Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax when asked by The Daily Caller News Foundation Tuesday.

When asked if Fairfax’s accuser should be believed, every senator asked, dodged the question or acted like they had not heard the news, despite the fact it has been major national news for multiple days.

Less than an hour later, Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders returned and pretended that he was on a phone call to avoid answering questions about Fairfax’s accuser.

“I haven’t even looked at the details about that. I really haven’t. I just know the high level. I haven’t really looked at the details about any of that. It’s a tough situation but I just don’t look at the details. It’s just not something that I’ve focused on,” Alabama Democratic Sen. Doug Jones said to TheDCNF.

“Well I think we’ve got to get more information at this point. I don’t have anything other than just the very initial information. Certainly it needs to be taken seriously. But, we’ll have to get more information,” Michigan Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow told TheDCNF.

“I don’t know who Justin Fairfax is,” California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein told TheDCNF. When she was reminded who he was, she responded by saying, “I don’t want to get into that.”

“You know I sort of left most of this to Tim and Mark who have been following that,” Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy told TheDCNF, speaking about the two Democratic Virginia Senators and not saying if he believes the accuser.

This comes after a majority of Democrats on Capitol Hill would not discuss state legislature bills allowing late-term abortions Thursday, one day after Virginia Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam defended the “Repeal Act.” The proposed bill would remove restrictions on abortion in Virginia. The governor made controversial comments about late-term abortion.

“If a mother is in labor … the infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable,” Northam said. “The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and mother.”

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin told The Daily Caller News Foundation when asked about Northam’s comments:

“I haven’t seen anything. I’ve been in retreats. Obviously I just got out of a meeting.”

“I’m literally mid-sentence talking to staff about the vote I have to take right now. Happy to talk to you soon,” Delaware Democratic Sen. Chris Coons said to TheDCNF. “I’ve been in a caucus retreat for two days.”

Vermont Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy also said he did not hear the comments.

“I have no idea what he said. I have no idea what happened there. I do follow the governor of Vermont though, all the time,” Leahy told TheDCNF. (RELATED: Cassidy Unloads On Dems For Staying Silent About Northam — ‘Babies Being Aborted Aren’t This Silent’)

The comments received massive pushback from Republicans on Capitol Hill and across the country.
