Chargers Owner Dean Spanos Says They’ll Sign Philip Rivers To A New Deal

Los Angeles Chargers owner Dean Spanos expects Philip Rivers to be with the team for a bit longer.

The veteran quarterback is entering the final year of his contract with the team, and is set to make $16 million this season. It sounds like he’ll be around for at least a few more seasons.

“It’s gonna happen, it will happen. We have an understanding, as long (Rivers) wants to be here, we want him here. We love Philip Rivers, you can’t say enough great things about him. I don’t think the contract issue is a big thing for us or for him,” Spanos told reporters Tuesday when discussing a new deal, according to The Orange County Register. Spotrac has his value pegged at over $30 million a season, which seems absurd for a quarterback in his late 30s.

That seems like way to much money to pay Rivers. Don’t get me wrong. He has no problem spinning it, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable writing him a check of that size.

Not even close. Anything north of $30 million is too far.

Break him off $25 million a year, and call it a day. His market value from Spotrac is absurd, and he’s not worth that kind of cash, especially at the ripe old age of 37.

It might be time for me to take over the Chargers if Spanos is comfortable with throwing around that kind of money. That would handcuff the team for years to come, and would be insanely stupid. Pay him his market value and everything will be just fine.
