As temperatures inch upward and Memorial Day quickly approaches, pools across the country remain closed due to coronavirus restrictions.

Many are likely concerned about going for a swim, citing the possibility that coronavirus could be spread. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), however, says that there is “no evidence” that the virus can be spread to people through pool water, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas, as long as social-distancing measures are taken.

“Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water,” the CDC online guideline says.

Individuals, pool owners and operators should still take the steps to ensure that the virus isn’t spread, including following local and state guidelines that determine whether pools can reopen.

People at water venues should also continue practicing social distancing while also regularly washing their hands both in and out of the water, according to the CDC. (RELATED: Gov. Phil Murphy Says Jersey Shore Will Be Open By Memorial Day)

Those who operate community pools and water venues should follow the interim guidance for businesses and employers for cleaning and disinfecting water and the surrounding areas.

Some cities and states are considering reopening pools in May and June. Swimming pools in North Carolina could open May 22 as part of the state’s second phase of reopenings, as long as officials determine it’s safe to move forward, WLOS reported.

St. Louis, Missouri summer camps and pools are expected to reopen in early June with restrictions that are set to be released next week, according to FOX 2
