George Stephanopoulos reportedly wants to take over Alex Trebek’s role on “Jeopardy!”

Stephanopoulos’ agent has been lobbying for the coveted role, according to a report published Monday by The Wrap. However, a source close to Stephanopoulos claimed the “Good Morning America” co-host was not “actively” pursuing the role, the outlet reported.

Stephanopoulos talked about doing the show during an appearance on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show, according to The Hill.

“I think it would be a lot of fun,” Stephanopoulos said when asked if he wanted to take over the role, The Hill reported. “But I like what I’m doing too.” (RELATED: ‘Jeopardy!’ Host Alex Trebek Spent His Last Moments ‘Watching The Horizon’ With His Wife)

“You’ve got the intellectual capacity,” Stern reportedly replied. “It’s a show that wouldn’t damage your reputation. There is a certain gravitas. It’s for brighter people. It would make you look good.”

“It’s a great show,” Stephanopoulos agreed.

I’m not sure Stephanopoulos would be the best person to replace Trebek, who passed away Sunday from pancreatic cancer. While Stephanopoulos is a well-known TV personality, he’s not the most neutral one.

The best part about Trebek was that he kept his political opinions to himself and let “Jeopardy!” be an escape from the noise. I’m not sure it would stay that way with Stephanopoulos running the show.
