The White House reacted Monday to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s tell-all interview with Oprah, that dealt with accusations of racism and thoughts of suicide.

“Let me first say that, obviously many of us caught the interview, I don’t know if as many Americans did and many people around the world,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki responded. “Meghan Markle is a private citizen and so is Harry at this point.”(RELATED: Meghan Markle Accuses Royals Of Racism, Says She Considered Killing Herself)

“For anyone to come forward and speak about their own struggles with mental health and tell their own personal story that takes courage,” she added. “That is certainly something the president believes and he has talked about the importance of investing in a lot of these areas that they are committed to in the future as well. ” (RELATED: Meghan Markle’s Rep Denies Former Advisor To The Duchess Filed Bullying Complaint Against Her)

“We aren’t going to provide additional commentary from here on behalf of the president or others given that these are private citizens sharing their own story and struggle,” Psaki continued. “We have a strong and abiding relationship with the British people and a special partnership with the government of the United Kingdom on a range of issues, and that will continue.” (RELATED: Meghan Markle And Prince Harry To Have ‘Intimate’ Sit-Down Interview With Oprah)

During a primetime special, the former “Suits” actress and her royal husband spoke with Winfrey on a wide range of topics including that the duchess, at one point, contemplated suicide and felt it was the only solution following the negative press she received after marrying Harry in 2018, the “Today” show reported.

“I just didn’t see a solution,” Meghan explained. “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.”

The duchess explained that she finally told Harry what she was going through and recalled “how he just cradled” her.

The tell-all interview also touched on accusations of racism she said over alleged “concerns and conversations” about “how dark” their first born’s “skin might be” from other members of the royal family while she was pregnant. Markle is half-black.

Winfrey asked Prince Harry about the conversations too and he declined to share details.

“That conversation I am never going to share, but at the time it was awkward and I was a bit shocked,” the duke explained. “That was right at the beginning… what will the kids look like?”
