A gay coalition is partnering with a parental rights in education group to rally the community against a Wisconsin school’s sexual education curriculum that tells sixth grade teachers to refer to a female as “a person with a vulva.”

In August, the Wauwatosa School Board in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, approved a “Human Growth and Development” curriculum which recommends educators read kindergartners picture books featuring transgender children. Gays Against Groomers, a national group of gay people working against the sexualizing of children “under the guise of LGBTQIA+,” are rallying outside the next school board meeting with Wauwatosa families and Moms For Liberty, a parental rights in education group, to march and speak out against the implementation of the curriculum. “The goal of Moms for Liberty and Gays Against Groomers is two-fold,” Scarlett Johnson, head of Ozaukee, Wisconsin’s Moms For Liberty chapter, told the DCNF. “Support Wauwatosa community members who oppose comprehensive sex education; but also we are sending a message to districts all throughout Wisconsin: If you dare try to sexualize our kids, deny biological reality and subvert parental rights, we will fight back.”

The “Human Growth and Development” curriculum recommends that teachers read kindergartners the book “Sparkle Boy,” a story about a young boy who would rather dress and act like a girl. In third grade, students are taught about about gender identity, introduced to “they/them” pronouns and told that gender may not always align with biological sex.

In sixth grade, teachers are told to refer to a female as a “person with a vulva” in order to be “inclusive.” The students are taught that their friends and family might try to change and influence their “attitudes, beliefs and expectations” towards concepts like gender identity and sexual orientation.

Gays Against Groomers founder Jaimee Mitchell told the DCNF that Gays Against Groomers is effective in protesting sexual education curriculums such as the one in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, because those pushing the curriculum in schools think they are speaking for the LGBTQ community.

“None of this is appropriate for kids,” Mitchell told the DCNF. “This is being pushed by outside forces that aren’t even necessarily part of our community. They’re using us as shields to ram this through. They’re using it as a protection. We take great issue with that because we in the community that oppose this, we are the majority. It’s really harmful to us to be associated with it. We’re coming from inside the community to use our voices to try and put an end to it.”

Mitchell told the DCNF that she plans to speak at the board meeting about how the students at Wauwatosa School District are being indoctrinated through the new curriculum.

“Our mission, I always say, is two-fold,” Mitchell told the DCNF. “First and foremost, protect children to stop this from happening, but also to save our community because if gay rights ever do get rolled back, the backlash is already happening. I can’t even blame people because all you see coming out from the community is this attack on kids now, but if our rights ever do get rolled back it will be the fault of these activists who have hijacked our community.”

Wauwatosa School District did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
