The city of Denver has spent close to $25 million housing migrants as the number of illegal immigrants entering the U.S. continues to surge, Fox News reported.

Denver city officials told Fox that the expenses for migrant housing is close to $24.8 million, which is more than the expected $20 million the city expected in April to spend within six months. Denver is not the only sanctuary city struggling to manage the influx of migrants; New York City and Chicago are experiencing budget deficits as they provide temporary housing to migrants, according to Fox. Southwestern states have seen a surge of illegal immigrants crossing the border, and Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has bused migrants to Denver, New York City, Chicago and more in response to the rise in illegal border crossing. However, the bused migrants only contribute a fraction to the total number of illegal immigrants living in the U.S., according to Fox.

Democratic Denver Mayor Mike Johnston announced a $4 billion budget last week that includes $20 million dedicated to migrant sheltering services. Since December, the city of Denver spent over $23 million to provide aid to over 15,000 migrants who have been arriving to the city, Axios reported in August.

Former Democratic Denver Mayor Michael Hancock declared a state of emergency in December over the arrival of nearly 900 illegal immigrants. Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis shared plans to send migrants to New York City and Chicago in January.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson publicized a $538 million budget deficit last week that was driven by several factors including “the cost to care for new migrants arriving to the city.” The records show $200 million of the deficit comes from “Special Event Project” costs, which included migrant care.

New York City has taken in over 10,000 migrants a month and Mayor Eric Adams expressed concerns that the migrant crisis “will destroy” the city. Within three years, New York City is projected to spend $12 billion to provide shelter to migrants.

Angry New Yorkers protested the city’s intake of migrants and yelled “Close the border!” at members of Congress while they held a press conference. New York City received over 100,000 migrants in the past year.

Denver’s Office of Immigrant & Refugee Affairs and Polis’ office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
