A 15-year-old Michigan boy saved the life of a woman whose car plunged into Lake St. Clair on Tuesday afternoon, WXYZ reported.
John Agnello was fishing at the marina by the lake with his mother when he saw a car crash into the water, the outlet reported. Agnello and another man reportedly leaped into the lake to help the female driver trapped inside her car.
“I just see a car … flying in the air. It was about 15 yards into the water already — that far,” the teenager told WXYZ. “The car was at like 65% water, so then we had to get her out the window because the door wasn’t opening.”
After Agnello and the male bystander managed to pull the woman ashore, the teenager jumped back into the lake to make sure that no one else was trapped inside the vehicle, the outlet reported.
Agnello recalled that he felt “kind of scared” inside the car as he was feeling his way out of it, the outlet reported. “It kind of got hard to get out [of the underwater car], but everything was fine,” he said. (RELATED: Two Rescued After ‘Personal Watercraft Explosion:’ REPORT)
Beth Agnello, John’s mother, called 9-1-1 for assistance while her son was underwater, the outlet reported. She described her son as a hero for his actions.
“As a hero, I’m hoping that he stays humble and considers some career options for his future,” Beth told the outlet.
Agnello said he was simply doing what he was raised to do by his family when someone was in need. The 15-year-old added he did not know whether he would take up the vocation of a first responder in the future.
St. Clair Shores Police Department (SCSPD) later issued a statement on the incident, noting that the driver was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.”
The accident remains under investigation, according to police.
