The explosive eruption of Yellowstone National Park’s Biscuit Basin’s Black Diamond Pool may have created a whole new geyser.
On the morning of July 23 a massive explosion destroyed part of the boardwalk and sent tourists scampering for safety in the Wyoming portion of Yellowstone. The bang was caused by a “local hydrothermal” event near the Black Diamond and Sapphire Pools in Biscuit Basin, just north of Old Faithful. No one was hurt by the blast, but the ground under Yellowstone might be cracking up a bit.
The geyser blew water and rock debris up to 600 feet into the air, six times higher than initially reported, according to Live Science.

Geologists are still surveying the site and doing their analysis of all those rocks they’re so obsessed with. Initial results suggest the geyser didn’t exhale much bedrock, meaning it was a very shallow explosion, according to the Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles. The scariest part is that there were no precursor events to warn geologists, tourists, and park rangers of the imminent danger. As no one was hurt, this doesn’t feel like a big deal. But it should be. (RELATED: Foot Found Floating Inside Shoe At Yellowstone National Park)
