NBC released the first four minutes of a potentially pretty dark new comedy “St. Denis Medical” Saturday, from the hilarious team that brought us hits like “The Office,” “Superstore” and “American Auto.”
The first trailer for “St. Denis Medical” dropped on YouTube on Wednesday, more than two months from its intended release on Nov. 12. Such a lengthy marketing campaign — and the number of times I’ve seen this thing pop up on my phone — suggests this could be America’s new favorite single-camera comedy, following on the heels of shows like the aforementioned and “Parks & Recreation.”
And if the first four minutes are anything to go by, this could be one of the funniest new shows coming this fall.
In the trailer and opening, we’re introduced to registered nurse Alex (played by Allison Tolman), Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey of “Reno 911“), Ron (David Alan Grier) and Serena (Kahyun Kim). (RELATED: The Sandman Is Back With His Next Special, ‘Adam Sandler: Love You’)
You may also recognize Mekki Leeper, who played Noah on the absolute smash-hit series “Jury Duty.” And one of my favorite actors of all time, Kaliko Kauahi, plays Val, as well as Josh Lawson playing Bruce, according to the description.
“This mockumentary-style sitcom is about the employees of an underfunded and understaffed hospital in Oregon,” NBC said of the show. “Like real-life medical professionals, the characters come to work every day trying to balance their innate desire to do their very best to help people with their innate desire to not lose their own sanity.” (RELATED: Trailer For ‘SNL’ Movie Comes Out And It’s Not What We Expected)
Despite dealing with extremely high stakes (people’s lives) NBC promises “many, many laughs.” And after seeing just a snippet, I tend to believe NBC.
