BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Andy Roddick has pulled out of this year’s Davis Cup, although the American star said he’s not “retiring” from the competition and could play in the future.

The United States plays Serbia on March 5-7 in Belgrade in the first round.

The 27-year-old Roddick spoke Friday after beating Richard Gasquet of France in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International.

Roddick injured his left knee last October. The top American on the ATP World Tour said he doesn’t want to risk damaging the knee by changing court surfaces frequently.

Roddick has played 22 Davis Cup matches, including the 2007 final win over Russia, and has a 31-11 record in singles.
