ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Hall of Famer Willie Brown is retiring after 39 years as a player and assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders.
Brown told television reporters camped outside the team’s facility on Wednesday that he was retiring. He spent the past 15 years as an assistant defensive backs coach and director of squad development.
Brown arrived in Oakland in a trade with Denver in 1967 and became one of the best cornerbacks in NFL history. He intercepted 39 passes and provided one of the most memorable plays ever for the Raiders. His 75-yard interception return for a touchdown against Minnesota helped Oakland win its first Super Bowl title following the 1976 season. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984.
