Harrisonburg resident Beth Huddleston is working to get her concealed handgun permit.

“This is my first experience with shooting any type of gun, you know, other than the water pistol when I was a kid,” says Huddleston.

Huddleston is taking the course at the U.S. Training and Development Center.

She says, when she’s out alone or her husband’s out of town, she wants to be able to protect herself.

“We live out in the country and there was an instance where someone did come into our home, and so naturally we’d want to do some kind of self-protection, so a gun is just the first thing you think of,” says Huddleston.

Donald Tumblin has been a concealed handgun instructor for nearly 20 years, and says he has seen an increase in the number of women taking the course.
