Stupak: Democrats dread cost of supporting more underprivileged babies

According to this NRO interview with Rep. Bart Stupak, the Democratic argument for funding abortion in the health care bill is purely Malthusian:

What are Democratic leaders saying? “If you pass the Stupak amendment, more children will be born, and therefore it will cost us millions more. That’s one of the arguments I’ve been hearing,” Stupak says. “Money is their hang-up. Is this how we now value life in America? If money is the issue — come on, we can find room in the budget. This is lifewe’re talking about.”

It’s hard to imagine anyone in the Democratic leadership actually saying this out loud, even if Stupak’s claim does read like a tin-eared, sloppy, but ultimately earnest appeal to a certain stereotype (the anti-welfare conservative/suburban white person).

How wild would it be if Stupak, like, actually named some of these secret Malthusians?!
