President Sarkozy’s attempts to quash rumours about problems in his marriage have backfired after his advisers spoke out about an international plot, blamed a glamorous former minister and ordered the state security service to investigate.

Carla Bruni, the President’s wife, tried last night to quash claims that she and her husband were obsessed with a conspiracy to spread rumours of their joint infidelity. In a radio interview she said: “For my husband and myself, these rumours are of no significance. It is true that we were victims of rumours and it wasn’t pleasant but this has not the slightest importance for us.”
