Most people are familiar with the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic, nearly 100 years ago. The catastrophe was romanticised (rightfully so) in the 1997 blockbuster – when Rose told Jack that she would “never let go,” she also captured the sentiment many people felt about the ship.
Surprisingly, the sinking of the Titanic is not the worst maritime disaster. Based on death toll, it actually ranks only fifth in history.
