“Eat it and hush.” That’s what grandma used to say before force-feeding the young children collard greens and skim milk. And it seems Pelosi et al. are using that tactic at The Capitol’s cafeteria.
This week, the House will vote on H.R. 2499, the Puerto Rico Democracy Act, which’ll put ‘Ricans on the path toward statehood. Those of us more familiar with The Capitol’s cafeteria than its proceedings know that, apart from its delicious BBQ and extensive salad bar, the joint has a lively “Global” section, which country-hops often.
One day it might be Portuguese, another might feature Icelandic delicacies. But today’s selection just happened to be from:
It’s easy to imagine why this ploy was conceived:
“Mmmm, this sopón de garbanzos con patas de cerdo is delicious. You know what, I think I will vote for that Act.”
Is nothing spared from partisan meddling? To be fair, though, the cafeteria really hasn’t seen this level of lunchtime politicking since 1959, when Sam Rayburn’s aides were forced to choke down nearly 434 pounds worth of “Hawaiian Steaks.”
