Joe Lieberman bill would strip suspects’ citizenship

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) thinks he’s found a work-around on the whole Miranda rights debate for U.S. citizens accused of terrorism: Strip their citizenship and ship them to Guantanamo.

Lieberman plans to introduce a bill that would amend a decades-old law aimed at yanking citizenship from U.S. citizens who fight for a foreign military.

“I’m now putting together legislation to amend that to [specify that] any individual American citizen who is found to be involved in a foreign terrorist organization, as defined by the Department of State, would be deprived of their citizenship rights,” Lieberman said Tuesday.

I have a “work around” too. Have cops with itchy trigger fingers who lost friends and loved ones in 9/11 go in for the arrest of citizen terrorists.

Hey Joe …..When this guy is convicted of treason by using WMD’s and shot to death, he wont be needing his citizenship. Like your thought .too grayzel.

How does this “work around miranda”?? Lieberman said:

“I’m now putting together legislation to amend that to [specify that] any individual American citizen who is found to be involved in a foreign terrorist organization, as defined by the Department of State, would be deprived of their citizenship rights,”

Now, call me naive… but miranda is read at the time of arrest, NOT AFTER CONVICTION. Or, are we going just just let this apply to anyone who is accused? Frankly, I find that idea of a government being able to strip citizenship and therefore rights of it’s citizens simply be “accusing them” of something to be scarier than the threat of terrorism.

    I farking hate Lieberman.

I do not agree that NATURAL BORN or “de jure” should not be deprived of their citizenship, only perhaps their lives if convicted. However, NATURALIZED or “de facto” citizens can already be stripped of their citizenship if they commit certain heinous crimes. Won’t make much difference either way if we make terrorism a death penalty crime. Either one would be dead!

Sorry, that first line should read:

” I do not agree that NATURAL BORN or “de jure” citizens should be deprived of their citizenship…”

What a bunch of crap from Lieberman. Where are his constitutional values now? An American citizen, no matter WHAT he/she is acused of doing is INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. You cannot strip the citizenship of an American citizen willy nilly, no matter how guilty he/she looks UNTIL THE LEGAL PROCESS TAKES ITS COURSE and he/she is proven guilty.

Lieberman? What’s the point. He’s nothing more than a bio-system for progressive(socialist) democrats.

Hey Joe, we already have a law on the books that would cover what you want to do. It is called try them for treason. Is that to simple for you?
