The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, said this morning that he’d prefer that Congress not overturn the ban on allowing openly gay people to serve in the military until the Defense Department has finished studying how such a repeal would be implemented.
Mullen, in an appearance on Fox News Sunday, said that he continues to believe the so-called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy should be repealed. But he said it would be best if lawmakers awaited the outcome of a review of the matter that he and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates ordered earlier this year. The review is intended to allow the Pentagon to examine how a repeal would be implemented, and how such a repeal could affect recruitment, retention, and readiness of the armed forces.
