It’s good to be (sin)king

The Hill reports:

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have a packed social schedule this week, with two major galas and a reception for college athletes.

On Monday evening, the president will welcome collegiate star athletes to the White House for a reception at 5:45 p.m. The annual event, first held by former President George W. Bush, recognizes outstanding student athletes in more than a dozen sports, including field-hockey, lacrosse, and volleyball…

On Wednesday the First Couple will don black tie for the annual Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute gala, one of the more entertaining political galas of the Washington fall season…

Hopefully the Obamas get some rest Thursday or Friday, because they will be back in formalwear on Saturday night for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s (CBCF) annual Phoenix Awards dinner.

All presidents have busy social schedules, of course, but it’s only a problem when the president is a Republican. Then it means he’s an arrogant, out of touch modern-day Nero. Whereas when a Democrat president parties down… Well, that’s just his due, isn’t it?

Especially when it’s a president as awesome as Obama. Every day he gets more and more popular, as WaPo notes:

Two years into his presidency, Obama’s approval ratings have fallen like those of most of his predecessors, who tended to dip in the polls about halfway through a term. Then again, most presidents aren’t an industry unto themselves. The people who have made bank despite a bad economy are certainly taking notice.

Souvenir vendors in Washington say once-thriving sales of the garish merchandise fawning over the president are nowhere near what they were…

In Union Station, the souvenir shop once dubbed the Obama Store because of its mostly Obama-related selection (save for the Michael Jackson memorabilia of the same vein that popped up after his death) has closed…

Using merchandise sales as a measure of public opinion is anything but definitive. The downward trend in sales could simply mean that the market has been exhausted: How many Obama shirts can one person own, anyway?

The trend in sales, however, does mirror the trend in the president’s popularity.

What?? When did the Washington Post turn into a bunch of  teabagging racists? Help me out here, LA Times!

Nearly two years ago, the political world could only marvel at the breadth of voter support for Barack Obama…

A scant 20 months later, the Obama coalition is frayed and frazzled. A majority of those who voted for Obama still approve of the job he is doing. But that number is eroding.

Surprisingly, support for the president among Latinos, young people and women has dropped as much as it has among groups that were considered less likely to stick with the president, such as white males, according to an analysis by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

Shut up. No it hasn’t. Shut up! What are you doing? Stop it. I’ve got my fingers in my ears, I’m not listening, I’m not listening, la la la la la!!

I need a taste, man, just a little taste…

Ahhhhhh. That’s it. Everything’s good. November? Never heard of it.
