Obama tells U.N. his focus is economic growth

President Barack Obama, speaking before the United Nations, on Thursday said he has no greater focus than rescuing the U.S. economy from the brink of collapse and called on the world to embrace emerging economies.

“America has joined with nations around the world to spur growth, and the renewed demand that could restart job creation,” Mr. Obama said. He added, “We cannot—and will not—rest until these seeds of progress grow into a broader prosperity, for all Americans, and for people around the globe.”

His comments may help beat back intense criticism that he hasn’t been focused enough on the economy, a charge he has been fighting for months. In recent weeks, Mr. Obama has revealed a new series of business-friendly proposals to spur growth.
