Jerry Brown’s campaign on Monday claimed that Meg Whitman, his GOP rival in the California gubernatorial race, endorsed the job the Democrat did when he held the position 30 years ago.

In a new ad, the Brown campaign shows Whitman saying, “You know, thirty years ago, anything was possible in this state…I mean it’s why I came to California, so many years ago.” The ad points out that Brown was governor then and touts his record of cutting spending and creating jobs.

In an e-mail accompanying the ad, Brown’s press secretary Sterling Clifford equated Whitman’s statement with an endorsement of the Democrat’s “record as governor.”

Brown and Whitman are locked in a tight contest to replace Arnold Schwarzenegger. Whitman has spent $163 million of her own money in the race but Brown remains ahead in the race, with the latest poll showing him up by 6 points.
