Dave Eiland out as Yankees pitching coach

NEW YORK — The retooling of the Yankees has already begun and it starts with a subtraction. Pitching coach Dave Eiland will not return to the Yankees, general manager Brian Cashman said today.

Aside from saying that the decision was not related to how the team’s pitching broke down in the American League Championship Series loss to the Rangers, Cashman offered no details about why he made the decision.

Eiland has been an organization man. A former Yankees player, Eiland worked his way up from the minor leagues to join the Yankees coaching staff. This was the final year of his contract.

Cashman refused to say whether the decision was related to Eiland’s month-long absence earlier this season for personal reasons, which have not been publicly disclosed.
