MSNBC suspends Keith Olbermann: For this relief, much thanks

This just in from Mediaite. MSNBC President Phil Griffin has issued a statement:

I became aware of Keith’s political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay.

I’m not sure why this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Let’s hope it’s only temporary, or my friend Ruth Graham will need to start all over, mocking whoever they put in that timeslot. Maddow? Alan Grayson? Che’s ghost?

For more on this developing story, see KeithOlbermann.com.

P.S. Keith Olbermann on Phil Griffin, June 2008: “Phil thinks he’s my boss.” (Thanks, Stephen Spruiell.)

P.P.S. For posterity’s sake, this is our front page right now:

P.P.P.S. Just two weeks ago, Olbermann reminded Juan Williams that freedom of speech didn’t mean he couldn’t be fired for violating his contract. Good point, Keith!

P.P.P.P.S. William Kristol says, “Keep Keith!”

oh yeah i forgot that you guys own keitholbermann.com XD i don’t know how i forgot but i did. i went there and i was like “WTF.”

The beauty of this is that Olbermann hoisted himself on his own petard (or was it retard?) when he moralized over the Williams firing by NPR. It is entirely possible, maybe even probable, that the managemnet at NBC saw his comment and had a eureka moment. They saw a way to fire Olbermann, using his own pompous observations on contract law! Ahhhh, the sweet irony.

I don’t agree with this action by MSNBC. By firing him, they do so under the premise that he violated the network’s policies and standards, which, ostensibly, are set in place to protect the tenets of objective journalism. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, knows that Keith Olbermann is neither objective, nor a journalist.

That’s a great point. I’m also worried this will propel him back to the NFL–was it NBC’s Sunday Night Football he was on? Please, God, No. I’m forgetting why they parted ways in the first place–but I really don’t feel like Googling the Keith.

I’ve never seen one of Keith’s MSLSD entertainment shows. I think he’s a small man with Pay Attention To Me Hair–a teen at the mall in a big suit a la David Byrne, only minus the girlfriend who’s better than that, and minus the intellectual heft. Which reminds me of something completely unrelated–why is irwinhandleman called “Brian”?
