Representative Illeana Ros-Lehtinen gives GOP response to SOTU in Spanish

Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen delivered the Republicans’ response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union in Spanish, the Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

The Cuban native spoke Tuesday evening immediately following Obama’s address, and her speech was aired nationwide by Spanish-language media. The speech covered similar themes as Wis. Rep. Paul Ryan’s English response, the Miami Herald reported.

Ros-Lehtinen is the chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and called for the elimination of U.S. financial support of the U.N. Human Rights Council. She gave her response from Miami, where she was taking care of her sick mother.

We the People need to turn far, far away from any involvement in the U.N. and make the building a homeless shelter. That will serve our people better. We can offer free space to evangelicals and aspiring teachers to give to their community by allowing them to donate time to educating the people who are in need here in our nation. This will offer hope and opportunity here at home. …where it’s seriously needed.
