Palin: America out of step with Reagan’s values

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — America is on a “road to ruin” because of misguided policies in Washington and needs to get back in step with the values of Ronald Reagan, Sarah Palin said at an event honoring the former president’s legacy.

The 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee delivered a stinging critique of Washington during her speech Friday, part of the national celebration marking the centennial of Reagan’s birth on Feb. 6.

Revisiting themes familiar from her 2008 campaign, she said the nation was being shackled by high debt and taxes, dense government regulation and rising spending, often for programs that don’t work. She said a rush toward green energy was overlooking the nation’s oil and natural gas reserves, a choice that will cost jobs and drive up pump prices.

She blamed Washington leaders — an apparent reference to the Obama administration — for doing “everything in their power to stymie responsible domestic drilling.”

“This is dangerous. This is insane,” she said. “This is not the road to national greatness, it is the road to ruin.”

She alluded to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address last month, saying it amounted to a statement that “the era of big government is here to stay.”

Palin was asked to talk about Reagan’s 1964 speech, “A Time for Choosing,” which he gave on behalf of then-Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. In it, he talks at length about the dangers of high taxes and encroaching big government, as well as the necessity of strong national security.

She said the decisions the nation faces are not unlike those Reagan talked of in the 1960s, only the economy of today is worse, from home foreclosures to high unemployment.

“This is a time for choosing again, and the vision we outline here is just as stark as it was in 1964. But we must look over the horizon, as Reagan did. We must see where these unsound policies will ultimately end, and that’s in decline and defeat,” she said.

She said Reagan saw the danger of President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society programs, and “he refused to sit down and be silent as our liberties were eroded by an out of control, centralized government that overtaxed and overreached in utter disregard of constitutional limits.”

“We could choose one direction or the other, socialism or freedom and free markets,” Palin said.

Palin received a roaring ovation, but Reagan’s son told The Associated Press in an interview that he doesn’t see anything in common between his dad and the former Alaska governor, who was invited to speak by the event’s sponsor, the conservative Young America’s Foundation.

“Sarah Palin is a soap opera, basically. She’s doing mostly what she does to make money and keep her name in the news,” Ron Reagan said.

“She is not a serious candidate for president and never has been,” said Reagan, a political independent whose politics lean left.

But former Reagan speechwriter Kenneth Khachigian praised the choice of Palin to discuss Reagan’s legacy.

Palin was a teenager when Reagan took office in 1981 and like many young people “their lives and philosophy and political fortunes were shaped by the Reagan era,” Khachigian says. “She can reflect on that as well as anyone could.”

Palin was introduced to the nation at the Republican National Convention in 2008, and her folksy, wisecracking style sometimes earned her comparisons to Reagan, who was known for his wit and appeal beyond the traditional Republican base, especially with blue-collar Democrats. She frequently referred to Reagan on the campaign trail, and in her debate with Vice President Joe Biden reprised Reagan’s famous rejoinder from his 1980 debate with Jimmy Carter, “There you go again.”

If she is making in any preparations to run for the presidency in 2012, she made no mention of it in her remarks.

Palin, who now is closely aligned with the tea party movement, has become for some a polarizing political figure.

Tea partiers rail against soaring public debt and sprawling government programs like Social Security and Medicare. But public debt roughly tripled on Reagan’s watch and he did not attempt to dismantle Social Security or Medicare during his term, says Reagan biographer Lou Cannon.

“He was no tea partier,” Cannon says.

The Young America’s Foundation was founded in the 1960s to promote conservative ideas on college campuses, and it purchased Reagan’s former ranch in 1998. The foundation is not connected with the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.

Found it very interesting when I watched some of her interview with Brody of CBN – started quoting scripture verses in place of some of her rather disgusting language. Gee who else did we just see do that? We need a true leader not another inexperienced empty suit – we already have that as well. How about Herman Cain, Congressman West just to name a few.

  • clw

From an Illinoian who has had to suffer thru the Blagojevich crap, I can tell you from first-hand experience that Sarah Palin did Alaskans a HUGE favor by leaving office rather than spend all of the time she should be governing, on defending herself against expensive, frivolous lawsuits on the taxpayers DIME!

The fact that ignore that makes you a disingenuous and dishonest.

    • clw

      @ Talibangelical.

      • talibangelical

Just the type of leader America needs…the first sign of trouble, quit! What a great country this would be elected officials quit the at the first site of an investigation or lawsuit. You know what they call someone who quits – a quitter.

I can’t believe in this take-charge-of-your-own-destiny community of the DC everyone rushes to defend a quitter. Rushes to defend someone who supported the Wall St bailout. I can only anxiously await how all of her supporters will react if she actually comes out in support of including GOProud in the GOP platform of 2012.

        Excuses, excuses, excuses.

        • glassmaker

That’s about as dishonest as it gets. She didn’t quit at the “first sign of trouble” or “at the first site of an investigation or lawsuit.” Are you seriously so uninformed that you are not aware of how many lawsuits and accusations she was under? Do you not know how much money it was costing the State of Alaska? Have you never read about how much staff time and money it was taking to defend those lawsuits — she won them ALL , by the way? I think you’re fully aware of the facts and just choose to lie and be a troll about it. So much for your fearing the Good Lord. *lightning strike coming soon!

          • talibangelical

So she won them all, but still quit….why? Do you know they were investigating and trying to get rid of Lincoln..did he quit? Guess what, they investigated Reagan too..did he quit? Nixon quit, I will give you that.

Re found innocent, not so fast. “Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin abused her power as Alaska’s governor and violated state ethics law by trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from the state police, a state investigator’s report concluded Friday.” 10/10/08

But okay, let’s ignore the fact on her quitting and just agree she is a quitter. What is your excuse for her support of the Wall St bail-out?

Here is what she wrote about the 700 Billion dollar bailout in her book (so no excuse that her support was only because she was VP candidate to McCain at the time…which would still be no excuse): “The House of Representatives rejected a Bush-backed economic bailout plan in a vote in which two-thirds of Republicans voted no. The impression this made on the electorate was not helpful to our cause. Millions of Americans were poised to go bankrupt or lose their savings, and the perception was that Republicans had failed to respond.”

Those are her own, written words over a year after the bail-out.

Go ahead, defend her support of the government bail-outs.

          • glassmaker

You really area dishonest tool. I hope you didn’t hurt your back moving those goalposts from your original post. Hope you put on some bug spray before you wandered out into the weeds.

That quote is from the Branchflower report that was deemed by the Alaska State Legislature as biased and incomplete. There were never any ethics charges brought up against Palin — only some left wing hack making a report. But don’t bother to put up the whole truth — typical.

I don’t give a flying flip who voted for TARP and who didn’t because it hasn’t been used or played out the way it was perceived and promised in the first place. I don’t know why you’re so hung up on it, except that’s your talking point of the day.

You didn’t bother to address any of my questions, so I’ll take that as a win and move on. You’re only in it for the lies anyway.

ok so i come into this thread and see there are 110 comments… wow. the haters get more and more pathetic every day. i watched her speech- she didn’t say anything controversial or anything like that. it really wasn’t a big opportunity for the haters to criticize. yet every single time there is a palin article here, there is a huge number of comments and a big reason for that is the haters starting arguments. i swear that if some other conservative said the exact same speech, there wouldn’t be all this arguing going on in this thread. but because it’s palin, there is suddenly some big controversy because the people who hate her keep trying to start trouble. there is just no limit to how much you guys annoy me.

    • riseabove

Aww…don’t be annoyed. This is our version of Jerry Springer. Guests who had absolutely no shame would get up there in front of the entire nation to have their hair pulled and blouses torn just enough for a nice plump breast to pop out. They were psychological and emotional masochists allowing themselves to be exploited, which is exactly what we have here. Make a ham sandwich, sit back and enjoy! lol

  • jonavark

Ha ha! Even in a Palin thread where old squarepio would assume to have some support he is getting bashed by everyone here.

To the newbies. Do your best to ignore squarepeg. He has a very very tiny brain and after all the hate and stupidity there isn’t much room for anything else.

Do your best to ignore him. You can’t teach him anything and he can’t learn anything. His only desire is for attention. No one has any respect for him and it usually only takes new folks a couple of posts to start telling him his head is in his ass.

    • scorpioman

Just before game time I looked up my ass and found your head. Just where I thought it would be.

Ah, Scorp, stop sharing your fantasies here… but do go check once again to see what’s up your rear… or who. Always good to keep tabs on that, I would think.

We pray to God that Sarah Palin will be our next President of USA in 2013 because She will REVIVE the good times in the economy of America, She will RENEW the lost hope of The American People and She will RESTORE the Greatness of America.

God Bless and Protect Sarah Palin and Her Family Forever….

    • SolipsisticToo

      ….just so sad and pathetic.

      • RoadtoFREEDOM

Sollypop, what is sad and pathetic about holding traditional American values? Or were you talking about yourself and the political left.

nevermind, the answer is self evident in the November election results and the repudiation of Obama’s agenda in polls and now, thankfully, in the COURTS.

        • SargeH

One can believe in traditional American values without acting like a 16-yr-old panting for a prom date.

    • indy1

Ballet Boy has nothing in common with his father but their shared name. Bravo Sarah!

  • talibangelical

She was for the Wall St. bailout…before she was against it.

Didn’t she lose her last election? Didn’t she quit her last elected post? Do not a majority of Americans, including Republicans, think she is unqualified for national office?

Does she do anything except whine about how she is treated by the media (of which she is a member) and criticize others who have not quit their elected positions? What is her plan? I get it, lower taxes (they haven’t been lower in decades) and a free market. Buzz words only without a plan.

BTW, save your breath..I know, I know…I am a troll, Palin-hater who is truly afraid of her magnetic personality and God-fearing truth. I am socialist, marxist Obabma boot-licker. There…save you some time.

    • glassmaker

      “I know, I know…I am a troll,”

Admitting you have a problem was your first step. Now, stick with it and before you know it, you might be a viable member of society.

    • RoadtoFREEDOM

Well, talinban bootlicker, you seem obsessed with criticising Palin… are you capable of acknowledging anything positive about her?

How about that she fearlessly and effectively confronts Obama and the media on their BS and has ignited a passion for conservatism. Perhaps being president or governor isn’t the pinnacle of her calling, ever considered that? Or are you enamored with government that is all your imagination will allow you to perceive?

I’m not in the tank for Palin, but I admire her and am glad she is on my team fighting tyranny and speaking Reagan’s ideas in a time when so many like you so badly need to hear them.

What exactly do you have against liberty, freedom, the Constitution, and admitting that Progressive policies have universally failed and bankrupted our nation over the last 100 years?

I’ll take any criticism you can levy against Palin and rub your nose in the gargantuan and growing percentage of our debt and deficit consumed by misguided social spending.

And before you blather on about defense spending, I’ll say that the big government nation building neo con side of the GOP can take their share of the blame, too… but all shame pales in comparison to the utter failure of the left, Carter, Obama, and don’t get your willie in a twist, Clinton was no Democrat as he failed to enact jack until he converted to Republican-lite.

Whine all you want, but Palin would be a better President than Bamby… but then again, so would having a vacancy in the job, so that’s not really fair to Palin.

      • pink
        • glassmaker

Comparing Palin’s approval ratings with Obama’s is absolutely the stupidest comparison I’ve ever seen. Obama’s been treated as a messiah by the press and the democrats for four years now and still can’t maintain over 50% approval rating. Palin has been bashed, lied about and her reputation mutilated by the press since 2008 – how the hell could her ratings possibly be any higher.

      • talibangelical

Okay..let me just state this again…She was for the Wall St. bailout…before she was against it. At at time when she had to make a crunch-time decision, this was hers. Please explain (or try to excuse) her view on this when it mattered most.

I know she is the TP darling, but come one…she said the Wall St bailout was “necessary”. Does she get a hall pass on this because…why? Why is she not as accountable as every other pol who was for it?

        • clw

Take it from someone who doesn’t give a rip about Sarah Palin one way or the other… the fact that you guys go off the rails every time you hear her name shows how terrified you are of her. You either need a sedative or therapy.

        • RoadtoFREEDOM

You know what, pretty much everyone was for the Wall Street Bail out, and TARP, and it is silly to single out that one thing about Palin.

If you want to hang people based on one issue, then let’s start with Obamacare, shall we? When it is ruled unconstitutional, you’ll get to hear Bamby say he was for it before he was against it, ha ha.

    • indy1

You are either too young or too stupid to remember that the RINOs and lib media said the same thing about Ronald Reagan until he shocked the world with his victory over Jimma Carter in 1980.

      • RoadtoFREEDOM

We probably shouldn’t rub his historic 49 state landslide in 84 in his face… oh, but I guess I just did.

Fact is, Palin was supposed to slink away after Journolist did their worst… but 08, 09, 10, and now 2011 she’s more powerful than ever. I would not bet against her, that’s for sure.

      • SargeH

I knew Ronald Reagan; I voted for Ronald Reagan. Sarah Palin is no Ronald Reagan.

        • RoadtoFREEDOM

Fair enough, she is not. No one could be. I’m simply defending her against vicious liberal slander. In my view, she’s in her best position right now. I’d prefer we get someone else to be the nominee.

    • jonavark

No Natalie you’re not a troll. But your range is pretty limited. You hate Palin so much that you only come here to vent. By all means vent. But I think everyone would take you more seriously if you actually said something with merit and thought. If you think coming here and ranting about the same old things will change the minds of any Palin supporters you think more of yourself than is realistic.

      • talibangelical

I know. I really don’t come here to change anyone’s mind. Actually it is all done in the spirit of open debate and with good cheer. Oh well.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jasmine-Clark/1785223171 Jasmine Clark

“She was for the Wall St. bailout…before she was against it.”

well she had to speak for mccain… i’m so glad she doesn’t have to do that anymore! mccain isn’t too strong of a conservative!

“Didn’t she lose her last election?”

i’m pretty sure it was mccain’s election.

“Didn’t she quit her last elected post?”

didn’t she have to deal with a flood of meaningless lawsuits? guess you forgot that part.

“Do not a majority of Americans, including Republicans, think she is unqualified for national office?”

hmm i don’t know what percentage of americans think that but the ones who do were misled by the media i guess. the media often repeats the “unqualified” meme even though it’s a lie. they ignore her many accomplishments.

“Does she do anything except whine about how she is treated by the media”

ohhhh you mean the same media that lies about her? why in the world would she be upset about that. huh. guess she is over sensitive.

“(of which she is a member)”

well she is a fox news contributor… but she’s mainly talking about ABC, MSNBC, things like that, the mainstream media. (you know that.) she’s not angry at ALL people in the media- there are a few people in the media who are doing fine, reporting truth. most are not, however.

“and criticize others who have not quit their elected positions?”

ohhhh so just because people don’t quit, that automatically means they are a great politician!!! lots of politicians get into ethics scandals, money scandals, power abuses, affairs, bribery. but hey at least they didn’t quit!!! because resigning is the absolute worst thing a politician can do.

      “What is her plan?”

listen to her speeches, read her facebook notes, and you’ll find out!

“I get it, lower taxes (they haven’t been lower in decades) and a free market. Buzz words only without a plan.”

she keeps saying her plans over and over again but you ignore them.

“BTW, save your breath..I know, I know…I am a troll,”

      yes.

      “Palin-hater”

      obviously.

“who is truly afraid of her magnetic personality and God-fearing truth.”

if you aren’t afraid of her… you should be. =)

“I am socialist, marxist Obabma boot-licker. There…save you some time.”

For some reason I treat you with kid gloves too often, Scorp. You are a typical non-heterosexual, making literally EVERYTHING about your bedroom identity and proclivities.

News flash… there is nothing wrong with being hetero. you wouldn’t have anyone to annoy if suddenly everyone got so with your side that we stopped procreating (and spare me some stupid lesbian frozen test tube program).

I have non-hetero acquaintances, and I like to be tolerant of others – up until the point where their actions harm others… and your agenda is a clear and present danger to America (the progressive agenda that hates traditional American values).

          • RoadtoFREEDOM

CLW, absolutely agree. There is a sad tendency in the gay community to go beyond asking to be left alone and lurching far into demanding to be idealized or celebrated. One too many gay pride parades perhaps?

Of course, what drives this is an inner self loathing which is expressed through overcompensation and narcissism to mask it. the left and the gay community have that in common… and they blame it all on the hetero conservative because they need a scapegoat. They are bigots, in short.

Which is why people who are not bigoted, have traditional good values and a live and let live attitude are always bewildered by the bile spewed by people like Scorpio-boy.
