Obama tells Brazil he wants stronger ties

Font Size:

U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday told Brazilians he wants to strengthen ties between the two countries, based on shared values and economic partnership.

The two countries “share certain enduring values and ideals” based primarily on “the power and promise of democracy,” Obama told an audience of some 2,000 guests at a speech he gave in the recently restored Municipal Theater in downtown Rio de Janeiro.

The president is on the second day of a five-day tour through Latin America to promote economic ties, which will also take him to Chile and El Salvador. The trip has been overshadowed by allied military action in Libya to contain strongman Col. Moammar Gadhafi, but Mr. Obama largely sidestepped the question of the Middle East and north Africa in his speech.
