Liberal website mocks disabled toddler

Daniel Keylin reports:

The satirical, left-leaning blog Wonkette seems to have gone too far in a recent post titled, ”Greatest Living American: A Children’s Treasury of Trig Crap On His Birthday.”

The post, written by Jack Stuef, contains numerous off-color “jokes” about Sarah Palin’s 3-year-old special needs son Trig Palin, and implies he may have been conceived as a result of incest.

“What’s he dreaming about? Nothing. He’s retarded,” wrote Steuf.

The piece also includes several Youtube clips of Trig which mock the child and his disability.

As William Jacobson notes, this isn’t the first time Wonkette has attacked Trig under the guise of political commentary on his mom. This, despite Wonkette editor Ken Layne’s claim that “Trig is cool with us.” Just imagine what they’d say about him if he wasn’t.

I’ve never understood the charge that Palin “exploits” Trig. It started from the moment she held her baby onstage at the Republican National Convention. What was she supposed to do, leave him in the car? If she hid him away with a nanny somewhere and refused to talk about him, do you really think the keen intellects who give us Wonkette.com would have no problem with it?

I used to be acquainted with Ken Layne a bit, back in the old days before he made a career of pointing and laughing at the babies of people he doesn’t like. He was one of the first bloggers I ever read, and he helped inspire me to give it a try. So it’s with a wistful sense of nostalgia that I say: Chin up, Ken. Now you get to be a martyr.

P.S. Blue on blue: Ken Layne vs. Tommy Christopher.

P.P.S. Newsbusters asks: “What has become of today’s liberalism that makes it acceptable to attack the mentally handicapped if they or their parents are conservatives?”

P.P.P.S. Wonkette deletes post ridiculing Sarah Palin’s disabled son. After Layne already told Tommy Christopher, “As you know on the internet there is no ‘taking down the post.’ Why even try that? So people like you can get another freelance internet column out of it by feigning outrage again?” Remember: Outrage that you don’t share is always phony. Well, this sort of scrubbing is nothing new. Ken completely deleted his blog archives years ago, presumably so his current audience won’t find out that he used to be sane.

P.P.P.P.S. Blue on blue, Pt. 2: Layne vs. Weigel. You know, if Sarah Palin were a liberal Democrat, people like Ken Layne wouldn’t criticize her treatment of Trig. Because Trig wouldn’t exist.

Trig is not cool with them. They just don’t want to face the truth of how awfully they’ve treated him. They’re disgusting people.

    Steuf is the retard.

I think we’re all missing the important question here…What does Jessica Cutler think about this whole thing?

I remember reading Ken Layne when I first discovered blogs in the days right before 9/11. Back then it seemed that Layne, Matt Welch, Kaus, Instapundit and a few others were part of a small select crowd of political bloggers – the pioneers who paved the way for thousands to follow. After 9/11, Layne was considered part of the “war blogger” camp, because he was all for Afghanistan and made fun of left-wing idiots like Ted Rall. I don’t remember when he bailed and went over (returned?) to the left – some time before Sullivan.

But even back then when I agreed him, I always thought that his writing style was blatantly derivative of Hunter S. Thompson. It’s a compact, brash, but slightly confessional, style, peppered of unconventional insults and slurs like “swine,” “cretins,” and “weasels” etc. for his antagonists. Many years later, it still looks like he’s deliberately imitating that style and tone in his letters. Does anyone else see this? Isn’t it kind of “weaselly,” to use the term he calls Weigel, to affect such a voice? It’s like plagerism or when a comedian stealing other comedian’s act or jokes. He’s a hack. I love that he tried to stick to his guns – HST would’ve done the same! But eventually had to (was forced to?) delete the post anyway. Ha-ha. What a poseur.

I hope you are being sarcastic, Alaskan. But if not, the rich irony of your statement rings clear: It is liberals who would decide that Trig Palin is not worth keeping around.

Indeed, most of the hatred for Palin & Trig stems from the fact Sarah Palin didn’t rush off and have an abortion the moment she learned Trig had Downs Syndrome.

In Paul Ryan’s America, not only would Trig be given a chance at life but the people who genuinely love him — his family — would be the ones making the medical decisions. Not some bean counter hired by a political body.

Oh, that and the fact it’s freakin’ LIBERAL bloggers making fun of a special needs child. Yeah, that’s *fabulous* “protection”…

    Like I said, I hope you’re being sarcastic…

      Irony? Me?

I’m a regular jonathan swift wanttabe.

In Paul Ryan’s America, the Trigs of America would have to fend for themselves.

Thank God, he had the liberals to protect him.
