The Hill’s In the Know column reports that actor Rob Lowe’s son, Matthew, will begin an internship with U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s office next week.

Matthew, 17, wants to avoid the spotlight during his time as a Capitol Hill intern for the Virginia Republican, a source told the Washington newspaper.

While Lowe’s son may be new to politics, the “West Wing” and “Parks and Recreation” actor is no stranger to the game and has straddled both sides of the aisle.

Lowe was famously involved in a scandal, having appeared in a sex tape with an underage girl the night before the 1988 Democratic National Convention. He claimed he didn’t know the girl’s age, and it was confirmed that they’d met in a bar. At the time, Lowe was working for Michael Dukakis’ presidential campaign. Yet in 2003, Lowe switched teams, volunteering to help Republican and fellow celebrity Arnold Schwarzenegger in his bid for California governor. He called the Governator a “born leader” who would “put the people above partisan politics.”

Lowe is also familiar with the Washington, D.C. scene, having produced a reality show following young D.C. denizens and entrepreneurs. The series is currently being shopped around to cable networks.
