It’s the issue of hostage-taking. It’s as if someone puts a gun to your head and says, “Give me your money.” And then you say, “Why won’t you give them your money?” You leave out the whole context that there’s being a gun held to your head. And that is not fair, and that is not right. And yet… And Harry is right, we keep getting that situation. Well, the issue that we are here today about is, you cannot run government — because the other side, our side, can do it too, we… …say, “We will hurt innocent people to get our complete way,” instead of sitting down and negotiating, as the Founding Fathers intended this government to be. And for the media to say, “Oh, we’re ignoring the gun held to your head, now, why don’t you give in to them and let the thing go,” is just not fair and not right and not evenhanded.
Yeah, it’s like putting a gun to somebody’s head and saying, “Give me your money.” Y’know, just like the government does every April 15th.
Wow, this was a petulant little tirade even for Schumer. That’s right, folks: If you want to rein in spending, get the government off people’s backs, and let everyone keep a little more of the money they’ve earned, you’re taking hostages. There are guns to people’s heads, although it’s not really clear whose heads. And money is being taken, although it’s not really clear whose money. The point is, it’s all very frightening. And of course, the media is biased against the Democrats. But most importantly: You are a meanie and a stinkyhead and Chuck Schumer does not like you.
You know who probably enjoys watching Chuck Schumer mime a gun being put to his head by people who disagree with him? Gabby Giffords. She probably thinks that’s just the sort of New Tone we need. But hey, it’s not like he put up a map with crosshairs on it or something.
Ever notice how the government works just fine when Democrats are getting everything they want? But if you thwart their will in the slightest, suddenly the government is broken and the Founding Fathers want Fox News to shut up already and everybody just shut up, because it’s not fair it’s not fair it’s not fair. Why are you holding a gun to Chuck Schumer’s head and demanding he slow down the untrammeled growth of our government the tiniest little bit? Why are you reminding him whose money it is he’s talking about?

I think that violent discourse in political life, right, left or center, is wrong and should be rejected. But I do think we, as elected officials, have an obligation to try and tone that down. If we tone it down, then maybe the media will be less vociferous.
