Sensible folks would do anything to avoid an Adolf Hilter comparison, but rapper Kanye West, who is known for making wildly offensive statements, is hardly a normal guy.
Performing at the Big Chill music festival over the weekend, the “All of the Lights” singer complained that others treat him as if he’s a crazy person or the Nazi leader.
“And once again I wake up, and I’m a monster,” West said. “And I walk through the hotel and I walk down the street and people look at me like I’m fucking insane, like I’m Hitler.”
But West, who was brutally criticized in 2009 for senselessly interrupting country songbird Taylor Swift’s MTV Video Music Award acceptance speech, says outsiders will someday figure him out.
“One day, one day a light will shine through and one day people will understand everything I ever did, ever said, was to throw myself on the blade for the sake of someone else, for the sake of people,” West said.
According to TMZ, which obtained footage of the 34-year-old’s speech, the recording artist continued, “Michael Jordan changed so much in basketball, he took his power to make a difference. It’s so much fucking going on in music right now and somebody has to make a fucking difference.”
Considering West’s history of making outrageous comments, it comes as no surprise that onlookers react to him in such a strong manner. When “Redneck Woman” songstress Gretchen Wilson beat him out for a American Music Award in 2004, West reportedly stormed out of the show and said he’d been “robbed” of the best new artist accolade. And after New Orleans sustained serious damage as a result of Hurriance Katrina, West showed up to a relief concert broadcast by NBC and famously said of then-president George W. Bush, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”
