The Daily Caller’s Matt Lewis was on hand in Charleston, S.C., when Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced he would seek the Republican nomination for president.

Having met and interviewed Perry on several occasions, Lewis believes Perry is well-positioned to make a serious bid for the White House. Perry’s charisma and optimism, Lewis says, will be a boon for the governor. But he concedes that Perry’s stylistic similarities to former President George W. Bush may pose a major obstacle as the nation copes with overcoming “Bush fatigue.”

Lewis also believes that if Perry wins the nomination, the contrast with Obama will be stark, leading to a vicious general election that might be described as a cultural battle between the “two Americas.”
