Alec Baldwin sets stage for NYC mayoral campaign by asking if Bin Laden was behind 9/11

If you’re a famous guy with a head full of deep thoughts and nobody to tell you when it might be in your own best interest not to express them, Twitter is the best thing ever. As long as you’ve got your iPhone in hand, you can give the whole world instant, unfiltered access to your keenest insights and most uniquely perceptive questions.*

As readers of TheDC Morning know, I’m a big fan of Alec Baldwin’s Twitter feed. Well, today he’s got a couple of doozies. Exhibit A:

Glad you asked, Alec. The answer is deeply nuanced and intricately complicated, but the short version is: Yes.

To be fair, Baldwin didn’t just blurt out this Socratic poser for no reason. He was responding to this query from a fan:

So it’s not that Alec Baldwin doubts Bin Laden was behind 9/11. He’s just telling us about a lie he’s convinced himself is true, i.e. that Bin Laden was behind 9/11. Got it?

But wait, there’s more! Baldwin immediately followed up with this brainteaser:

Talk about a complete stumper. Amalgam Virgo? I honestly had no idea, so I Googled it. According to Wikipedia:

Operation Amalgam Virgo is a CINCNORAD joint task counter-terrorist and field training exercise (FTX) carried out in Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida on early June 2001. NORAD sponsored the multi-agency planning exercise involving the hypothetical scenario of a cruise missile or UAV launched by a terrorist group [1]. Osama Bin Laden was pictured on the cover of the proposal for the exercise. Key military players involved in the exercise also included personnel from the 1st Air Force battalion, the U.S. National Guard, the U.S. Reserve forces, and the U.S. Navy.

Several naval ships including the USS Yorktown and the Navy Aegis cruiser were dispatched to the Gulf of Mexico as part of the multi-service anti-cruise missile operation. Military land personnel from the 1st Air Force also engaged in gathering radar information on low-level targets by using the Joint-Based Expeditionary Connectivity Center (JBECC), a mobile shelter capable of being deployed to high-risk regions while providing early warning signals on cruise missile attacks.

To recap: Alec Baldwin was asked which lie he keeps telling himself is true. He replied, “Do you think Bin Laden was behind 9/11?” Then he brought up a U.S. counterterrorism training exercise that took place a few months before 9/11, which was centered around a hypothetical cruise missile attack by the #1 terrorist in the world.

Now, before you jump to conclusions, please keep in mind that Alec Baldwin is just asking questions. Rather than make any accusations, I have a few questions of my own:

  1. Is Alec Baldwin a Truther?
  2. Is Alec Baldwin researching a film, television, or dinner theater role in which he portrays a Truther?
  3. Did Alec Baldwin have a few too many last night?
  4. Should the people who depend financially on Alec Baldwin try to convince him to delete the Twitter app from his phone?
  5. Is Alec Baldwin still planning to run for mayor of New York?

Just asking questions.

By the way: Alec Baldwin to host 9/11 forum at the Public Theater, 9/8. Oh, goodie.

P.S. It’s being pointed out in the comments that the Wikipedia entry for Amalgam Virgo is perhaps less than trustworthy. Which very well could be true; it’s not my conspiracy theory question. It seems unlikely that Alec Baldwin will care, but if you want to set him straight, you can contact him here. He just grabbed his Twitter shovel again and commenced to rhetorical diggin’, so you might be able to catch his eye.

P.P.S. New York Magazine:

Through a spokesman, Baldwin said this afternoon that his tweets were “absolutely not casting doubt on the issue of Osama Bin Laden’s role in 9/11.”

That’s right: Alec Baldwin has no doubt about Bin Laden’s role in 9/11, which is why he’s asking whether Bin Laden had a role in 9/11. Now that he’s dug this hole for himself, his brilliant plan is to claim he meant the opposite of what he said. Does Baldwin have the same PR team as Biden?

Sigh.  How many Americans know about Operation Cyclone to fund the Taliban in the 80s?  How many know about Able Danger?  Anthony Schaffer, Operation Dark Heart?  How did Building 7 WTC fall down, when it wasn’t hit by a plane?  At the very least it was allowed to happen.

Sigh all you want, Truther. Sigh to your heart’s content.

Pathetic.  You have no case.  You don’t even have an argument; you don’t even have a proper bluff; all this is, is “hand-waving.”

All you have here is this stupid little laundry-list of code words: “Operation Cyclone,” “Able Danger,” “Anthony Schaffer,” “Operation Dark Heart,” woo woo, and apparently you’re expecting us readers to google all this crap up, (and to selectively ignore all the google hits that point out what a lot of crap it IS), and then to somehow reach the same stupid conclusions as you have, about it, with no effort on your part.  It’s beyond stupid, it’s just flatline lazy.
      Try this, trutherboy:
1/ Make an assertion or an allegation, a specific one.
2/ Present some relevant evidence in support of that allegation.
3/ Make a case connecting that evidence to your allegation in a persuasive way.
Think you’re up to trying that?
No.  You’re not.  Not you clowntards, none of you.  Every time you show up on one of these threads, ALL you can do is (a) mumble the kind of cryptic non sequitur garbage you’ve typed out above, (b) complain that everybody else isn’t as brave and diligent and researcherly as yourselves, (c) speculate about WHY everybody else is so cowardly and delusional to not share in your sick little treasonous fantasy, and (d) congratulate yourselves on what relentless seekers of truth you supposedly are.
You present nothing because you know nothing because you ARE nothing.
