While accepting the 1964 Republican presidential nomination in San Francisco, Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater uttered his now iconic defense of political extremism.
“I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice,” he exhorted, echoing Cicero, to roaring applause. “And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”
