Newt Gingrich released the contract he signed with federal mortgage lender Freddie Mac Monday after his rival Mitt Romney spent the day challenging him on the issue.
The former House Speaker earned $25,000 per month during his time with Freddie Mac, which began on Jan. 1, 2006. He has claimed that he was paid as a “historian,” but the contract repeatedly characterizes him as a “consultant.” Gingrich eventually earned $1.6 million from the embattled mortgage giant.
The contract directed Gingrich to “provide consulting and related services, as requested by Freddie Mac’s Director.”
