Rick Santorum’s presidential campaign is arguing that reporters should ask rival Mitt Romney about his Mormon faith if they continue to scrutinize the former Pennsylvania senator’s Catholicism.

“Why is Mormonism off limits?” a Santorum aide told The Washington Examiner’s Byron York in response to stories in the media about a 2008 speech in Florida where the candidate discussed his beliefs about Satan.

In an email to The Daily Caller on Wednesday, spokeswoman Alice Stewart explained that, “The aide told Byron that we want to talk about jobs and the economy, but if one candidate is asked about their faith, all of them should be.” (READ MORE: The Devil and Rick Santorum)

Asked if Santorum plans to make this argument in Wednesday night’s debate, Stewart said: “Rick is going into this debate in hopes of debating what the voters have been asking about: jobs and the economy.”
