Hey, America: Former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo wants to set you up with his son.
The erstwhile liberal icon has begun touting his eldest child, current New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, for higher office, The New York Times reports. Mario told the Times that, given his son’s popularity in the Empire State, he could someday “have an opportunity to serve… the people of the United States.”
Mario added that his son is “the best governor in modern times.”
Andrew, for his part, has been busy insisting that he loves his current job and won’t run off the second something better comes along. At a press conference earlier this year, Andrew also implied that his decision to remain tight-lipped about any future plans are informed by his father’s long, but unconsummated, flirtation with national office.
“I’ve seen this movie before — actually, in this room,” he told reporters at the State Capitol in April. “There’s like a whole new déjà vu going on for me. So I know this play and I know how it turns out.”
The younger Cuomo earned his political stripes working for his father in the 1980s, and their unconventional relationship has long been the subject of press reports and insider gossip. Since his inauguration in 2011, Andrew has enjoyed sky-high approval ratings, and is often mentioned as a potential 2016 Democratic standard-bearer alongside the likes of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley.
