Despite polls showing that the majority of Americans support repealing President Barack Obama’s health care reform law, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told an audience that “the politics be damned,” Democrats are “very proud” of the legislation.

The former speaker of the House also predicted that the legislation will become more popular with the American people over time.

“From our standpoint, we came here to get a job done for the American people. We saw an opportunity to stand with those who created Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid in the ’60s, and now our generational opportunity to have health care as a right — not a privilege. And that is what we came here to do, that is what we have done,” she told an audience of Planned Parenthood workers, college students, parents and children on Wednesday at the Capitol.

“We think the more people know about this legislation, you see it has changed even in the past week, the support for it has increased and as people understand what we all heard here today — how it affects their lives directly — that will even grow. So as I’ve said before, the politics be damned — we came to do a job. We’re very proud of what we did. Of course, we are thrilled with the judgment of the court.” (SEE ALSO: Pelosi made between $1-5 million on Asian investments in 2011)

A Rasmussen poll released on July 9 shows that 53 percent of Americans somewhat favor repealing the legislation and 43 percent strongly support it. The House voted on Wednesday 244-185 to repeal the law.
