In a speech at the White House Monday, Vice President Joe Biden joked about getting a pay raise when taking office.

“You pay me a lot of money as vice president of the United States,” Biden said at a White House community leaders briefing on seniors issues.

“As the president said when we had our first meeting a couple of weeks after we were all sworn in, he thanked everybody for the sacrifices they made. Then, he looked and caught my eye and he said, ‘except Joe, he got a pay raise.’”

According to his 2011 tax returns, Biden’s total annual income was $379, 035. The vice president’s salary is $230,700.

Part of Biden’s income included $20,900 for renting a cottage on his property to the Secret Service.

Biden also said in his remarks that Congress should end the Bush-era tax cuts for individuals making $200,000 and couples making over $250,000 per year.
