Not many people are rushing to Missouri Rep. Todd Akin’s defense over comments he made during a televised interview Sunday that suggested a woman will not get pregnant if she is raped.
But actor Kirk Cameron of “Growing Pains” fame, a staunch Republican and social conservative who made controversial statements himself earlier this year about homosexuality, appeared on “The Today Show” Tuesday morning to come to Akin’s aid.
While Cameron admitted that Akin “misspoke,” he lauded the Senate candidate for his stance on aborition.
“Clearly, this is a man who is advocating the sanctity of life through and through,” Cameron said. “He said he misspoke and he apologized for it. I like to evaluate people based on their entire life, their entire career, and (what) they stand for.”
“He loves his wife, he’s got six children,” Cameron continued. “I believe he’s a good man. He’s now in a very, very difficult spot.”
Cameron was on the show to promote “Monumental,” a documentary he produced about morality in America, in which Akin appears.
During an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan in March, Cameron said that he disapproves of homosexuality and gay marriage because it is ”destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”
