TAMPA, Fla. — Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s youngest son Craig Romney made an appeal to Hispanic voters Thursday night during the GOP convention.
Speaking in Spanish, the younger Romney spoke briefly of his work in Chile and of his father — a family man who understands America is a nation of immigrants, loves the country and is prepared to take on the nation’s challenges.
Craig Romney reminded the convention hall, this time in English, that his father is the son of immigrants who achieved the American dream.
“It’s easy to forget that the story of my father’s success begins with the story of two immigrants — my grandfathers — who came to this country with little more than hope in the opportunity of America,” he said.
“Through their hard work and perseverance they lived the American dream, and gave opportunities to their children they wouldn’t have had anywhere else.”
Romney noted that Republicans are devoted to keeping the same path to opportunity available for all Americans, reminding the crowd of stories from past convention speakers Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and Texas senatorial candidate Ted Cruz.
“We’re seeing this story play out in the lives of many other Hispanic Americans who have become leaders in the Republican Party and throughout our nation,” he said. “These leaders, along with Hispanics across the country, will play a vital role in the Romney-Ryan comeback, as we fight to put America back on the path to prosperity.”
Romney’s comments followed a video homage to Republicans of Hispanic descent, with cameos from Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and others.
