Why gay Americans, and those who care about gay Americans, should vote for Mitt Romney

On November 6, Americans will go to the polls to elect our next president. For gay Americans, and for those who care about gay Americans, the choice for president is clear: Governor Mitt Romney.

While we applaud President Obama for supporting the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell — a failed policy that Governor Romney and his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan have said they will not reinstate — and while we give President Obama credit for coming to the Dick Cheney position on marriage equality, the truth is that Obama’s administration has been devastating for average gay people and their families.

I travel the country talking to average gay people, and I can tell you that for millions of gay Americans this election is about survival. I have heard the stories of gay families and couples worried about how much longer they can hold on, living paycheck to paycheck, facing the loss of their homes and fearing the loss of their jobs. Many gay Americans simply do not have the luxury to make gay marriage their number one issue. Many gay Americans — like their straight counterparts — simply cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama.

President Obama wants this election to be about divisive social issues, because his record on jobs and the economy is indefensible. But at this critical juncture, we need a president with the experience and expertise to turn the economy around. Someone who knows how free markets work. Mitt Romney is that candidate.

Recently, Harris Interactive released a poll of 1,190 LGBT voters conducted for Logo TV. The poll confirms exactly what we have been saying for years now — gay voters aren’t simply concerned with marriage. About 32% of respondents selected jobs or the economy as the most important issue in deciding their 2012 presidential election vote. Only 6% said that same-sex marriage was the most important issue.

For gay voters concerned about the economy, the facts speak for themselves. Real unemployment is at almost 15% and we have a president who not only doesn’t understand how free markets work, but is openly hostile to free market capitalism. President Obama’s repeated attacks on Governor Romney’s private sector record underscore this point. Instead of demonizing free markets, President Obama should be focusing on creating an economic environment that encourages free market investments and fosters job creation.

Governor Romney supports cutting taxes for middle-income Americans and simplifying our overly complex tax code. Unlike President Obama, Governor Romney understands that the last thing we need in this troubled economic environment is higher taxes.

Romney has a plan to make American companies more competitive by lowering corporate tax rates, opening new markets to U.S. goods through new free trade agreements and reducing bureaucratic red tape by eliminating unnecessary and unworkable federal regulations. He understands that there is no magic green bullet for creating energy independence, which is why he supports expanded utilization of American energy resources.

Romney is committed to repealing Obamacare and dramatically reducing federal spending, and he knows that we must reform entitlement programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid if we are to tackle the debt crisis.

Romney recognizes the continuing threat posed by rabidly anti-gay radical Islamic regimes. He will support Israel and do what it takes to prevent terrorist mad men like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Unlike Obama, Romney isn’t a career politician. He hasn’t been a part of the Washington crowd that got us into the mess we are in today. Indeed, it is his experience in the private sector that has most prepared him to be president. During his time at Bain Capital, Romney oversaw the restructuring, downsizing and refocusing of companies. Thanks to Romney’s efforts, previously bloated, inefficient and failed companies were turned around. He can turn around the bloated, inefficient and failed federal government too.

On issue after issue, Mitt Romney offers a vastly different — and unquestionably better — approach than the failed approach of Barack Obama. For gay Americans, and for those who care about gay Americans, the choice for president is an easy one. We simply cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama.

Readers,

Instead of sucking up to the political and corporate powers that dominate America, The Daily Caller is fighting for you — our readers. We humbly ask you to consider joining us in this fight.

Now that millions of readers are rejecting the increasingly biased and even corrupt corporate media and joining us daily, there are powerful forces lined up to stop us: the old guard of the news media hopes to marginalize us; the big corporate ad agencies want to deprive us of revenue and put us out of business; senators threaten to have our reporters arrested for asking simple questions; the big tech platforms want to limit our ability to communicate with you; and the political party establishments feel threatened by our independence.

We don't complain -- we can't stand complainers -- but we do call it how we see it. We have a fight on our hands, and it's intense. We need your help to smash through the big tech, big media and big government blockade.

We're the insurgent outsiders for a reason: our deep-dive investigations hold the powerful to account. Our original videos undermine their narratives on a daily basis. Even our insistence on having fun infuriates them -- because we won’t bend the knee to political correctness.

One reason we stand apart is because we are not afraid to say we love America. We love her with every fiber of our being, and we think she's worth saving from today’s craziness.

Help us save her.

A second reason we stand out is the sheer number of honest responsible reporters we have helped train. We have trained so many solid reporters that they now hold prominent positions at publications across the political spectrum. Hear a rare reasonable voice at a place like CNN? There’s a good chance they were trained at Daily Caller. Same goes for the numerous Daily Caller alumni dominating the news coverage at outlets such as Fox News, Newsmax, Daily Wire and many others.

Simply put, America needs solid reporters fighting to tell the truth or we will never have honest elections or a fair system. We are working tirelessly to make that happen and we are making a difference.

Since 2010, The Daily Caller has grown immensely. We're in the halls of Congress. We're in the Oval Office. And we're in up to 20 million homes every single month. That's 20 million Americans like you who are impossible to ignore.

We can overcome the forces lined up against all of us. This is an important mission but we can’t do it unless you — the everyday Americans forgotten by the establishment — have our back.

Please consider becoming a Daily Caller Patriot today, and help us keep doing work that holds politicians, corporations and other leaders accountable. Help us thumb our noses at political correctness. Help us train a new generation of news reporters who will actually tell the truth. And help us remind Americans everywhere that there are millions of us who remain clear-eyed about our country's greatness.

In return for membership, Daily Caller Patriots will be able to read The Daily Caller without any of the ads that we have long used to support our mission. We know the ads drive you crazy. They drive us crazy too. But we need revenue to keep the fight going. If you join us, we will cut out the ads for you and put every Lincoln-headed cent we earn into amplifying our voice, training even more solid reporters, and giving you the ad-free experience and lightning fast website you deserve.

Patriots will also be eligible for Patriots Only content, newsletters, chats and live events with our reporters and editors. It's simple: welcome us into your lives, and we'll welcome you into ours.

We can save America together.
