Rick Santorum: Republicans can ‘pull off a surprise’ in Pennsylvania

According to former Sen. Rick Santorum, Republicans have “a real opportunity” to “pull off a surprise” in the Keystone State this year.

He has kept a fairly low profile since his speech for Mitt Romney at the Republican Convention this August, but during an interview with TheDC, Santorum said: “I’ll be in Pennsylvania next week, and I’ll be doing some things for [Romney].”

(Santorum is also out with a new book this month, titled “American Patriots.”)

When asked if the state was merely “fool’s gold” for Republicans, who might once again be lured into throwing away their money on a hopeless cause, Santorum dismissed the characterization, saying:

You have two races in Pennsylvania, not just one. If this was just the president’s race and I saw the numbers that I was seeing, I’d say, ‘Ah, I’m not so sure I believe that.’ But there’s a senate race going in on Pennsylvania right now, too, that’s between an incumbent Democratic senator and a challenger — and he was given no chance to win this race. And his numbers are even a little better than Romney’s numbers. So I do believe that Pennsylvania has moved.

“I don’t know whether Governor Romney can win Pennsylvania,” Santorum added, “but Pennsylvania’s not the same state it was four years ago.”
