A super PAC that supports Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is about jump into the Missouri Senate race in support of Republican Todd Akin now that the race is tightening, The Daily Caller has learned.
A source close to Paul told TheDC that Americas Liberty PAC is “set to launch a last minute, six-figure ad buy in Missouri as polls show Akin within margin.”
Americas Liberty PAC, according to the source, was formed to support Paul and like-minded candidates.
Akin, a congressman, is locked in a tough race with Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill. The RealClearPolitics polling average has McCaskill up by five points.
This comes after news on Wednesday that Akin’s campaign placed a $300,000 ad buy and the Missouri GOP made a $386,000 buy this week.
A number of Republican groups, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee and American Crossroads, have opted not to spend money on his race after he was criticized for his comments on rape and abortion in August.
In an October interview with TheDC, Rick Tyler, an adviser to Akin’s campaign, estimated that they lost out on “anywhere from $5 million to $9 million” from these groups.
“We’ve held out own without their help,” Tyler said then, “and no one thought we’d be where we are.”
