Following the announcement of President Obama’s victory Tuesday evening, a crowd of students from nearby universities amassed in front of the White House to celebrate.
The crowd measured at least 2,000 people, with students arriving from nearby George Washington University and Georgetown University by foot, cab and train.
Students chanted and waved campaign signs, LBGT rainbow and American flags, and climbed the trees in front of the White House. The air was filled with the aromas of marijuana, alcohol and tobacco. Chants ranged from “Four more years!” to “U.S.A.”, although there were also faint chants for former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Police were also on the scene for crowd control purposes, and at least one student was arrested for crossing the police barrier in front of the White House.
Several drunk students in the crowd debated whether gathering in front of the White House was an appropriate way to celebrate.
“Well, if Romney won, then Wall Streeters would be down here doing the same thing,” one of them said.
