Addressing the criticism of federal childhood nutrition rules, former WNBA star Lisa Leslie told The Daily Caller that the federal government’s role in childhood nutrition should be “secondary” to parental responsibility.
Leslie told TheDC, however, that she supports First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, which is designed to reduce childhood obesity.
“I’m 100 percent behind it. As an athlete and a student athlete we need to really encourage our young kids to not just to get their education, but to keep moving, and it’s a shame that a lot of our governments — we’ve really removed a lot of the PE and different activities from schools, where we need our kids to be healthy and eat healthy,” she said at the taping of the BET Honors at the Warner Theatre, which airs on February 11.
Some students have protested some of the rules in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which requires schools to serve lunches under 850 calories. (RELATED: Nation’s hungry children revolt against Michelle Obama-backed regulations)
In response to those who oppose the federal government’s involvement in nutrition standards, Leslie said, “I’m in 100 percent agreeance [sic] that we as parents and people have to take control of whatever it is that we want for our children to do.”
“It starts at home, and then the government is there secondary as support,” she said.
