We all knew it was going to come at some point — it was just too easy a target.

Academy Awards host Seth McFarlane cracked an Abraham Lincoln/John Wilkes Booth assassination joke during the Oscars ceremony Sunday night.

McFarlane began by comparing Oscar nominee Daniel Day Lewis’ portrayal of the 16th president to previous attempts by other actors.

“I would argue, however, that the actor who really got inside Lincoln’s head was John Wilkes Booth,” he said, garnering “ooohs” from the audience. “Really? 150 years later and it’s still too soon?”
