The Ohio State Buckeyes may have just unleashed — and then immediately lost — a new offensive weapon for their 2013 football team: their nut-headed mascot, Brutus.

In a spring practice, the mascot lines up at quarterback, shows off some nifty footwork to elude a sack, then promptly gets laid out by an OSU defender and fumbles the ball.

It’s tough to determine what is more worthy of critique — Brutus’ ball security or the defender who found it necessary and appropriate to go airborne to deliver a punishing hit on the team’s mascot.

Not sure if hits like this are what Buckeye coaches look for to determine roster spots.

Brutus did show some toughness after hopping up right after receiving the huge blow.
