1.) Remembering Margaret Thatcher –– Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died at age 87. TheDC’s Matt Lewis shares his thoughts on the Iron Lady:
“I didn’t mention it, but I might have added that Thatcher’s own party pushed her aside after winning the Cold War. This is a lesson to us all that Enoch Powell was right. ‘All political lives, unless they are cut off in midstream at a happy juncture, end in failure, because that is the nature of politics and of human affairs.’ The rules of life apply to even the great ones.”
2.) Zion’s lion in Madrid –– According to polls, Spaniards don’t really like Israel, which makes it all the more surprising that a former Spanish prime minister has devoted so much of his post-political career defending Israel. TheDC’s Jamie Weinstein reports
“In 2000, then-Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar met with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei in Tehran. ‘And I remember very well at the beginning of my conversation,’ the now ex-prime minister explained to attendees gathered at the Temple Emanu-El synagogue to hear him speak last Tuesday. He ‘very clearly [said] in the first or second minute of our conversation: ‘we must to be friends [fight] Israel and the U.S.’ And I told him, ‘excuse me, but I am in … the other side. I am not available.’ Aznar wasn’t kidding. As Prime Minister of Spain from 1996 to 2004, Aznar distinguished himself as a staunch ally of the United States in the war on terror. He also stood out as a supporter of the State of Israel and its right to defend itself. Supporting Israel is not an obvious position for European politicians, much less Spanish ones. Polls consistently show Spain as one of the most anti-Israel countries in Europe. A 2012 poll revealed that nearly three quarters of Spaniards have a negative impression of Israel. But Aznar’s support for Israel isn’t so much political as it is ideological. He sees the Jewish state as leading the fight in the Western battle against Islamist terrorism.”
3.) The outrage that isn’t — Why is the media not speaking out on behalf of Jana Winter? Because she works for Fox News? TheDC’s Patrick Howley reports:
“Denver-based CNN journalist Jim Spellman says the total lack of media coverage of the legal travails faced by Fox News reporter Jana Winter for protecting her sources clearly demonstrates an anti-Fox News bias in the press. Spellman claimed in a tweet that if Winter, who faces a subpoena and potential contempt of court charges for protecting her sources, worked for the New York Times instead of Fox News, the case would be garnering far greater exposure. ‘Observation: If @janawinter, who may go to jail to protect sources, worked for @nytimes instead of @FoxNews the case would be huge,’ Spellman tweeted Sunday night.”
4.) Mohawk madness — First they came for the Mohawks, but TheDC Morning didn’t stay silent. TheDC’s Eric Owens reports:
“A five-year-old boy in Springfield, Ohio was sent home last week because school district officials deemed his new Mohawk hairdo too cool for kindergarten. WHIO-TV, the local CBS affiliate, has the story. Keshia Castle explained that school officials banned her son, Ethan Clos, from Reid Elementary School until he gets rid of his Mohawk — a haircut in which both sides of the head are shaven or bald and there is a stripe of clearly longer hair running down the center.”
First, let’s be clear: Mohawks look stupid. Unless you’re a punk rocker from the 1980s, probably best to pass on the Mohawk. That said, getting suspended for a Mohawk from a public school when you’re five years old? Are you kidding me? This isn’t North Korea.
