Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said he was shocked by the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, Monday morning.

“I’m deeply shocked and saddened by the shooting this morning at the Navy Yard,” Mabus said in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I have complete confidence in our first responders, and I continue to be completely focused on this very difficult situation,” he added.

Reports indicate that at least four people were killed and at least eight people were wounded in a shooting that occurred around 8:20 am at the Washington Navy Yard inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building.

Just before noon Monday, the Associated Press reported that a federal official said the shooter has died.

The Navy has advised family members of Washington Navy Yard employees to meet their loved ones at Nationals Park and people looking for information about their family members should call the Warfighter and Family Support Center at 202-433-6151 or 202-433-9713.

About 3,000 people work at the Naval Sea Systems headquarters.
